Excitement Builds for 2009 USA Baseball NTIS
National Team Identification Series to help organization select top talent across 13U, 15U, 17U age groups (DURHAM, N.C.) –
For the first time ever, USA Baseball will introduce a program-wide National Team Identification Series (NTIS) in 2009, guaranteeing the organization’s most comprehensive evaluation of talent in the 13U, 15U and 17U age groups ever. The NTIS promises to be one of the most heavily-scouted and premier events of the fall calendar. The event will consist of three separate age groups and a total of 648 players all competing for a chance to be selected by a USA Baseball National Team program and represent their country. The event will be held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex and adjoining Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C. from Sept. 17-20, 2009. “The 2009 NTIS represents a unique opportunity for any player aspiring to compete at the elite level of the game,” says USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO Paul Seiler. “From our 14U program to the World Baseball Classic team, USA Baseball has the privilege of developing the very best that the United States has to offer year after year. To have the most talented players in the country over three different age groups competing at our National Training Complex at the same time will make for a truly remarkable baseball atmosphere.” USA Baseball will name a minimum of eight players to the 2010 Tournament of Stars (18U), a minimum of eight players to the 2010 16U National Team Trials, a minimum of 24 players to the 2009 14U National Team Trials, and a minimum of 24 players to the 2010 14U National Team Trials. For a player born between 1994 and 1996 this represents the primary identification opportunity to play for a USA Baseball National Team program. Albert Almora, star of two gold medal-winning 14U National Teams and a veteran of the NTIS program, credits the event in helping him bring out the best in his game. “The 2008 NTIS was great competition,” Almora says. “It really gave me something to work for. There were a lot of kids trying out, so I knew I had to step it up and show what I’ve got.” Almora says that the NTIS prepared him for his two tournaments with the 14U National Team. Experiences, he says, that he will never forget. “It was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, and I want to continue doing it for the rest of my life.” For general program inquiries please contact Nate Logan at natelogan@usabaseball.com or by calling 919-474-8721 x 210. Who is USA Baseball?
Since 1978, USA Baseball has been the national governing body for the sport of baseball. It represents the sport in the United States as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and internationally as a member federation of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). What is the process for being selected to the 14u, 16u and 18u National Teams?
USA Baseball events are the only events in the country which give players the opportunity to be evaluated to represent the United States in international competition as members of the National Team. The 2009 USA Baseball NTIS will be the exclusive identification opportunity for the 2009 USA Baseball 14U National Team Trials and will also serve as an identification opportunity for the 2010 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, 2010 USA Baseball 16U National Team Trials and the 2010 14U National Team Trials.
The process is simple:
- Get invited to participate in the Great Lakes Stars event in Chicago on August 22-23 and 29-30, 2009.
- The top players will be selected for the Great Lakes Stars and will compete in the USA Baseball NTIS event in Cary, NC on September 17-20, 2009.
- Top players from this event will then be invited to participate with the 14u, 16u and 18u National Team Trials.
How does my son get invited to participate in the Great Lakes Identification Series?
Players must be recommended to the Caliendo Sports by a baseball professional — meaning a pro scout, college coach, club team coach, high school coach, instructor, or similar person that earns a living from baseball.
Our goal is for 75 of the TOP players in the Great Lakes at each age group to participate in the Great Lakes regional event in Chicago. Being invited to this event will be an immediate accolade, something that goes directly on your baseball resume.
Why is this a good opportunity for my son?
- USA Baseball events, like the NTIS, are the only events in the country which give players the opportunity to be evaluated to represent the United States in international competition as members of the National Team.
- These events will have the top players from the region and country participating. If your son is a high caliber player, he needs to compete in these events.
- Each step in this process is an honor and an accomplishment for aspiring baseball players. Accomplishments like this go directly in your son’s baseball resume for college coaches and scouts.
- Both the Great Lakes event in Chicago and the USA event in Cary, NC will be heavily scouted by college and pro scouts for high school age players.
- The Great Lakes event will be a great opportunity to go through a showcase-style event, run by baseball professionals. Even if your son is not selected to go forward, he will be more prepared for future showcase events.
- You will receive an evaluation report back based on on son’s performance at the Chicago event.
Who will do the evaluation?
The evaluators at the Great Lakes event will be former major league Players, Coaches, MLB scouts, College coaches and experienced talent evaluators. Each game will have two evaluators, plus two coaches observing the play and assessing player talent and make-up.
What is the cost?
The cost for the Great Lakes event in Chicago is $125 per player. For players selected to go to the USA Baseball event in Cary, NC, there will be an additional cost of $150 per player. The cost listed above does not include travel, lodging or food costs. This is a unique event that offers a high level of competition, exposure and opportunity. About USA Baseball
Since 1978 USA Baseball has been the national governing body (NGB) for the sport of baseball. It represents the sport in the United States as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and internationally as a member federation of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF).
Nearly every major national amateur baseball organization in America is united as a USA Baseball National Member Organization. As a result, USA Baseball governs more than 12 million amateur players in ballparks and playgrounds across the country.
As the commissioner’s office for amateur baseball, USA Baseball is a resource center for its various membership groups, fans, and players. USA Baseball is also responsible for promoting and developing the game of baseball on the grassroots level, both nationally and internationally.
PROFESSIONAL TEAM
Since 1999, USA Baseball has been selecting teams of professional-level minor league players to represent the United States in various international competitions, including the World Baseball Classic, Olympic Games and World Cup.
Among the first teams of professional players that USA Baseball fielded was the 2000 U.S. Olympic Baseball Team, managed by Tommy Lasorda at the Sydney Games. Led by Ben Sheets, the team of minor league players defeated Cuba for the gold medal.
For the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic, USA Baseball selected its first team comprised of Major League Baseball players. The team featured such stars as Chase Utley, Derek Jeter and Chipper Jones. In the second installment of the WBC in 2009, with players like Dustin Pedroia, Ryan Braun, Jeter, and Jimmy Rollins donning the red, white and blue, the U.S. team finished fourth, losing to Japan in the semifinals.
Other recent highlights for the Professional Team include World Cup gold in 2007, a team which featured current big league star Evan Longoria, and a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games behind young prospects Stephen Strasburg, Dexter Fowler and Matt LaPorta.
NATIONAL TEAM (COLLEGIATE)
The USA Baseball National Team consists of the top collegiate baseball players in the country. The team competes each summer in a schedule of exhibition games across the U.S. and overseas against the world’s top baseball talent. As part of this schedule, the U.S. squares off against the Japan Collegiate All-Stars nearly every summer, and faces off in international friendship series against the likes of Canada, Chinese Taipei, and the Netherlands. Each summer schedule also features a prominent international tournament for the age group, which include the Pan American Games and the FISU World Collegiate Baseball Championships.
Players who have worn the red, white, and blue for the National Team and have gone onto Major League Baseball success include such notables as David Price, Mark Prior, Jason Varitek, Todd Helton, Troy Glaus, Tino Martinez, Jason Jennings, Bobby Crosby, Ryan Howard, Huston Street, Troy Tulowitzki and Alex Gordon.
18U NATIONAL TEAM
Comprised of the nation’s top players ages 17-18, the USA Baseball 18U National Team is a perennial power on the international baseball scene. The team competes in two major events in bi-yearly cycles — the COPABE Junior Pan Am Championship and the IBAF World AAA Junior Championship, and the 18U National Team is a gold-medal favorite in both events each time it takes the field.
Each year, USA Baseball and its National Member Organizations who are competing in the event invite the top high school-aged players in America to the Tournament of Stars presented by Major League Baseball, an all-star tournament featuring top 18U players in the country. The event is used as the selection vehicle for the 18U National Team, wherein players vie for one of the squad’s 18 roster spots.
Current Major Leaguers Alex Rodriguez, Matt Holliday, Scott Kazmir, Jeff Francoeur, and B.J. and Justin Upton have all worn the USA jersey as 18U players.
16U NATIONAL TEAM
An international powerhouse, the USA Baseball 16U National Team has proven to be the country to beat on the global baseball scene since USA Baseball began selecting and training players in the 16U age category in the summer of 1997. Since then, the program has medaled each time it has taken the field in such international events as the IBAF World AA Youth Championships.
A staple on the 16U baseball community’s calendar, USA Baseball’s 16U Championships helps the organization identify players for the National Team. The event is held in two regions — East (Florida) and West (Arizona) — and 72 teams compete in each region. USA Baseball representatives and scouts select the top players from each region and from there the National Team is chosen.
Past 16U players who have gone on to play in the major leagues include Casey Kotchman, Billy Butler, Brett Anderson, Delmon Young, and James Loney.
14U NATIONAL TEAM
USA Baseball fielded its first-ever 14U National Team in 2007, and the team was an immediate success, going undefeated in winning the gold medal at the COPABE Pan Am ‘A’ Qualifier in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Later that year the U.S. sent its second 14U National Team to compete in the COPABE Pan Am ‘A’ Championship, where it too took home the gold.
Members of the USA Baseball 14U National Team are selected from, among other scouting channels, the pool of players participating in the annual USA Baseball National Team Identification Series in Cary, N.C.
WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM
The USA Baseball Women’s National Team was established in 2004 when USA Baseball began selecting and training an official National Team for women. An 18-player team was chosen following open tryouts across the nation, and the squad went on to capture the gold medal in the first-ever IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton, Canada. The team repeated as IBAF World Cup gold-medalists in 2006 in Taiwan and took home the bronze medal from the 2008 World Cup in Japan.
When not competing in the World Cup, the Women’s National Team competes in international friendship series, leads youth clinics and works to grow the game of baseball among women in the U.S.

Caliendo Sports International and USA Baseball join forces to evaluate National Team talent.
Caliendo Sports Internationals Baseball Program is honored to be selected by USA Baseball (http://usabaseball.com)to identify players and manage the Great Lakes Stars (Il/IN/IA/MN/MI, WI) in the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series.
